Three towns in South Africa face total blackouts

Three municipalities could see their power cut off by Eskom, unless they enter into an arrangement to settle their outstanding municipal debts.

This comes after Eskom initiated Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) processes against 14 non-paying municipalities in March 2026.

In a statement released 5 May, the power utility announced that it had issued final notices to the Dr Beyers Naudé, Kai !Garib, and Mamusa local municipalities over their unpaid debts.

Eskom said it would begin suspending electricity supply to these three municipalities from 8 May if they did not reach an agreement to settle their outstanding debt issues before then…
